Is graffiti a kind of art?

Nowadays, people are always seeking ways to express themselves. One of the most popular ways of achieving this is graffiti, a new trend which is catching on quickly in our modern society. Sketches and slogans that have overwhelmed the streets of many cities around the world over the last few years seem to divide those who lookat them. Some graffiti consider for a great number of people as provocative and insulting since they hide angry messages and therefore they condemn them in the most rigorous way.  However, many of them that areborn one night on a wall seems to be much more than a teenage rage.

Young people all overthe world tend to use alternative ways of art to express their feelings. Supporters of graffiti pinpoint that most of these paintings could easily becharacterized as masterpieces given that they embellish mundane and shabby walls and fill with colorsneighborhoods or roads hence making them look more vivid. It is beyond all doubt that some of them are really imaginative and by and large mirror the creativity and the resourcefulness of young people. Their signature style illustrates their emotion in the mostintense way ameliorating the wall streets of each country. Not only does itseem quite fascinating aesthetically but also it is an indication of a booming art. Art and the liberal thinking which it represents should definitely keep pace with the contemporary new way of life. People change andso do the forms of expression. The combination of colors which painters use and the plenty of messages which are disseminated are absolutely an indication of a breakthrough in the field of modern art.

At the other end of thespectrum, lots of people are inclinedto believe that this kind of self-expression damages the natural beauty oftheir town. They also argue that paintings on the walls of buildings or on public transportation are ugly and undermine the beauty of traditional art. They also contend that this kind of expression is really inappropriate due to the fact that the buildings own to the citizens and not to some rebellious young people. As a result, they consider that graffiti violates the public property and the individual right to ownership. Needless to say that for these people, the need of new artists to express themselves are considered of little importance and whether their workis actually worth or not, it doesn’t matter, because it indicates a delinquent behavior.

Nevertheless, to be able to judge the quality of graffiti, people should come out of constraints and laws. By observing graffiti, one must strip the “artwork” from definitions, concepts and stop thinking about the provisions of law that artists may violate. Only by looking at the graffiti as a work of its own without any history hiding behind, one can come to a safe conclusion.

One thing is for sure; judging from the outcome, there are real artists out there who for many reasons are forced to practice their art only on the streets. Perhaps they lack the appetite and the insistence to fit their art into the rules of society. Maybe this choice is beyond consciousness. Maybe it is.  In any case, the result of this tendency is to have full-color canvases - walls that can one day be recognized as magnum opus!
