Land Revenue System – Mahalwari System – Article 2/3

  • This system came up in the North Western India, Gangetic valley and parts of Central India.
  • The East India Company entered into a settlement or a treaty with the Mahal or the Estate.
  • The Mahal was a revenue unit of one or more villages.
  • The farmers in the Mahal were the real owners of the land and the revenue earned from it.
  • 50-60% of the total revenue was to be paid to the Company.
  • This share was supposed to be revised periodically but that never happened.
  • The heavy tax burdens on farmers reduced them to absolute poverty.
